Cape Town – ActionSA leader Herman Mashaba says he supports the Department of Home Affairs’ spending on deporting illegal immigrants and has called for harsh penalties for returning illegal immigrants.
Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber recently confirmed in a parliamentary reply that to date, South Africa has spent over R52 million in five months to deport over 19, 000 illegal immigrants.
According to TimesLive, while some argued that deported immigrants would eventually return, Mashaba called for prison sentences followed by re-deportation to deter repeated border breaches.
“South Africa should not hesitate to deport illegal foreigners. We can’t afford to be a country that legalises illegality and host those who break our country’s laws,” said Mashaba.

He added: “Let’s continue deporting until they learn to respect our country. Once deported and you return, you must face a harsh long-term prison sentence, and be deported after serving.”
Early this week, Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie also echoed teh same sentiments, urging the immediate closure of foreign-owned spaza shops and the deportation of illegal immigrants after food poisoning incidents claimed the lives of learners at several Gauteng schools.
“I will never stop fighting for mass deportation. I have been bringing this matter up using channels afforded to me as Minister. I must respect the Minister of Home Affairs and give him space to do his job. We will never abandon this fight Patriots,” McKenzie said.
