Cape Town – President of the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA), Justice Mandisa Maya, has reportedly congratulated Justice Raymond Zondo on his appointment as South Africa’s new chief justice.
Zondo was already deputy chief justice, and his promotion to the top spot on the Constitutional Court came after lengthy, televised interviews last month with other leading candidates, including Maya.
President Cyril Ramaphosa announced Zondo’s appointment last week, even though the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) had recommended Maya for the position.
According to IOL, Maya pledged her “full support” for Zondo.

“President Maya offers her full support to the incoming chief justice and is committed to continue working with him in the exercise of judicial authority.
“Furthermore, President Maya has full confidence in Justice Zondo as a leader in the judiciary and has no doubt that the contribution he will continue to make in our jurisprudence and administration of justice will strengthen and move the South African Judiciary forward,” the report quoted a statement from Justice Maya’s office as saying.
Zondo is set to assume office on April 1.
A News24 report said that Ramaphosa has nominated Maya to be considered for the position of Deputy Chief Justice.
