Cape Town – A man in Limpopo was arrested for possessing and attempting to sell a pangolin valued at R150 000.
The arrest took place near Tzaneen after a tip-off to the police.
According to police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Matimba Maluleke, the suspect was found with the pangolin hidden in the boot of his vehicle.
“The team received a tip-off about a suspect who was allegedly on the way to sell a pangolin in Hoedspruit. Without any waste of time, the team followed up on the information and a suspicious vehicle was spotted in Gravelotte.
“Upon stopping and searching the suspicious vehicle, the team found a pangolin valued at R150 000 hidden in the boot inside the bag,” Maluleke said.
As he could not produce a permit for possessing the endangered animal, he was charged with illegal dealing in endangered species.
