Cape Town — Police in Thohoyandou in the Vhembe District of Limpopo arrested a 33-year-old male for allegedly assaulting and murdering his 16-year-old niece.
In a statement, police confirmed that the incident took place on Tuesday 11 February around 8:30 in the evening. Reports indicate the suspect was looking for the victim after she had not slept at home for a couple of days. The suspect, who is the victim’s uncle, located the victim at home.
“On arrival at home, the suspect had a confrontation with the victim and the situation got tense, he then assaulted the victim with an object. The victim tried to escape but fell down, and her uncle took her back to the house,” police spokesperson, Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, said.
The victim’s mother called emergency services but upon arrival, the victim was declared dead and the uncle was arrested immediately. Limpopo Police Commissioner, General Thembi Hadebe, condemend the tragic incident.
“It is shocking and disturbing to hear that the perpetrator in this matter is a family member, an uncle to the victim who is supposed to guide and protect a young girl in this regard. This incident underscores the importance of addressing, and preventing violence within a family setup and communities at large”, Hadebe said.
