Cape Town – A 54-year-old man, Eric Mundalamo, accused of fatally shooting his 42-year-old wife, Precious Mbedzi, during a church service in Makonde Shadani village, appeared in the Thohoyandou Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.
Mundalamo surrendered to police after the incident, and his case was postponed to June 10 for a formal bail application.
The shooting occurred while the congregation was worshipping, leading to Mbedzi’s death.
“It is reported that suspect entered the (church) premises on Saturday, March 30, at about 6pm, while the congregation was engaged in worship and callously fired multiple shots at the victim, resulting in her untimely death,” police spokesperson, Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said.
The motive remains unclear, but domestic violence is considered a possibility.
A police manhunt was launched after Mundalamo fled the scene in a silver-grey Toyota Corolla.
The incident adds to concerns about the rising murder rate in South Africa, with Police Minister Bheki Cele expressing worry over the increase in murders, totaling 7 710 between October and December last year.
