Cape Town – A 77-year-old man was arrested for attempted murder on Tuesday after he allegedly shot at a couple fishing along the Mogul river next to a plot in Rietspruit, Limpopo.
In a statement, police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mamphaswa Seabi said the suspect alleged that he was shooting at hippos.
“During the incident, a 38-year-old woman sustained a gun wound, while her partner managed to hide and he immediately informed the police and emergency services. The woman was taken to hospital for treatment and the police investigations ensued.

“The arrested suspect alleged that he was shooting at the animals (hippopotamus),” said Seabi.
Police seized two rifles, one revolver, one pistol and two airguns during the arrest.
The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Limpopo Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe called on community members to be responsible while handling their firearms.
Hadebe also urged those affected by the incident to stay calm and afford police the space to do their investigations.
The suspect will appear before the magistrate court in Lephalale on Thursday.
