Cape Town – The court has granted a successful injunction to Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane, preventing the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) from investigating his qualifications.
The ruling comes in the context of a wider corruption investigation concerning the University of Fort Hare.
Mabuyane has been accused of fraudulent activities, including falsely gaining admission to the Masters programme at the university and manipulating his M-Admin qualification into a Doctorate.
President Cyril Ramaphosa had instructed the SIU to look into corruption and irregularities at the university.

However, Mabuyane’s application for an interdict has been granted, halting the SIU’s investigation into his qualification.
The judgment was delivered by the Bhisho High Court on Tuesday.
“In the circumstances I grant the following order: The Special Investigating Unit is interdicted from enforcing proclamation 84 of 2022 published in government gazette on 5 August 2022. In so far the SIU has taken steps or intends to take steps that are directed at the applicant,” Judge Thandi Norman said.
According to SABC, in the application, Mabuyane said the investigation on him is an abuse and embarrassment.
Norman said all respondents in the matter are to bear their own costs.
“… Each party is to bear its own costs. I hand down the judgment, Norman said.
