Johannesburg – South Africa’s medicines regulatory authority says it has recorded two fatal cases of the rare Guillain-Barre syndrome in people who had received a Johnson & Johnson Covid jab.
The South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA) reported its first case in August and the second on Monday.
“SAHPRA has been informed of a second fatal case of Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) following vaccination with the Covid-19 vaccine Janssen,” it said in a statement, using the vaccine’s commercial name.
In a response to AFP Tuesday, Johnson & Johnson said “very rare cases of the neurological disorder, Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) have been reported following vaccination with the Janssen Covid-19 vaccine with most occurring during the first 42 days following vaccination”.
Rare neurological condition
“GBS is a very rare but severe adverse event that is associated with the administration of various vaccines and other medicines and can also be triggered by infections such as SARS-CoV-2,” it said, but made no direct reference to the South African cases.
Pressed for details, SAHPRA on Tuesday refused to disclose further information, citing “patient confidentiality” rules.
The regulator added that “the events reported in the vaccine recipient were consistent with the case definition of GBS and no other likely cause of GBS was identified at the time of illness” of the latest case.
GBS is a rare neurological condition that may occur with the administration of various vaccines or bacterial and viral infections.
It damages nerve cells, causing muscle weakness, numbness, tingling or, in the most severe cases, paralysis.
South Africa has recorded more than four million Covid-19 cases and 102,129 deaths – the highest toll in Africa.
Out of the population of around 60 million South Africans, 20.3 million individuals have been vaccinated – more than 9.2 million of them with the J&J formula, against 12.5 million who received the Pfizer jab, according to official statistics.
AFP
One person has reportedly died of a rare immune disease after receiving the Johnson & Johnson (J&J) vaccine.
The South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (Sahpra) made the announcement on Thursday, August 4, reports said.
“It is with sad hearts today that we confirm that Sahpra has been informed of a fatal case of a syndrome called Guillain-Barré (GBS). This was a case noted following vaccination with the Covid-19 Janssen vaccine.
“The causality assessment was conducted…and there is a conclusion that this case of GBS was associated with the individual who had received the Covid-19 Janssen vaccine,” News24 quoted Sahpra CEO Boitumelo Semete-Makokotlela as saying.
No further details were given due to patient confidentiality, EWN reported.
GBS is very rare but a severe adverse event that is associated with the administration of various vaccines and other medicines and can also be triggered by infections such as SARS-CoV-2.

South African scientist and epidemiologist Professor Salim Abdool Karim has reportedly warned that there could be a fifth wave of Covid-19 infections in early May but this would be dependent on the emergence of a new variant.
According to EWN, citizens have been urged to remain vigilant, especially after President Cyril Ramaphosa announced the lifting of the National State of Disaster, which was aimed at curbing the spread of the deadly disease.
However, Abdool Karim said the fifth wave was largely dependent on the emergence of a new coronavirus variant in the country.
“If the past trends continue, we can expect that we will see a fifth wave sometime in early May. But that’s always dependent on whether there is a new variant,” he said in an interview with Radio 702.
