Limpopo — The National Liquor Traders Association introduced a new alcohol curfew in Limpopo in an attempt to put a halt to crime and social ills in the province.
The law has been dubbed “Midnight Law’ and comes into effect on 1 August. MEC for Economic Development, Environment and Tourism, Rodgers Monama says the alcohol curfew is in the best interests following police reports of high levels of fatalities after midnight, eNCA reported.
Monama says several stakeholders, including the Department of Health, are on board with the law.
“People are quite happy and excited about this new law. I think we’ve been very fair and consultative in the process to ensure that we also contribute meaningfully.” he said.

Lucky Ntimane from the National Liquor Traders Association, expressed his disappointment at the new law which will ultimately affect alcohol sales. He also took issue with the Limpopo Liquour Board of alcohol renewal fees.
“We are not happy with the announcement of the ban but we also take issue with the Liquor board in Limpopo has also proposed to increase the liquor renewal fees from R100 to R750. We have made known our feelings through a letter to the Premier and we didn’t hear anything from the Province. We reserve our right to take this matter to court,” Ntimane said.
The Citizen reported that Monama said the regulation is part of the Limpopo Liquor Act; it will prohibit liquor outlets and nightlife facilities from selling alcohol past midnight.
He said alcohol plays a significant role in perpetuating GBV, child abuse, community instability, trauma incidents, and various sexual offenses. The new law pledges to enforce strict cut-offs for liquor trading hours, ensuring night clubs, taverns, shebeens and restaurants selling alcohol cease operations by midnight.
