Cape Town – A manhunt is underway in KwaZulu-Natal for suspects involved in the killing of an Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) ward councillor and two schoolchildren.
The councillor was ambushed in a suspected hit while attending to a broken-down vehicle on the R618 on Wednesday afternoon.
“A group of armed men stopped next to his vehicle and shot the councillor multiples times, he sadly succumbed to his injuries on the scene.
“The suspects then fired shots at a passing scholar transport taxi that was transporting school children. Four children were shot and wounded and two of them aged 11 and 12 years old sadly succumbed to their injuries,” National police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said.
Mathe said that the National Task Team for investigating political killings is involved in the case.
Meawhile, the IFP has expressed shock and distress over the incident, highlighting the ongoing concern of political assassinations in KwaZulu-Natal.
Recent months have seen similar incidents, contributing to a total of 155 political figures assassinated in the region between 2011 and September 2023, according to Police Minister Bheki Cele.
