“What made our task difficult was exactly that the candidates were all of a high quality and the uniqueness of the process which was also unprecedented in so far as the president for the first time ever, nominated more than one candidate to be interviewed by the Judicial Service Commission,” said Mpofu.
Maya was the only woman among four candidates for the Chief Justice position.
She beat acting deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo, Gauteng Judge President Dunstan Mlambo and Justice Mbuyiseni Madlanga.
According to The Citizen, the 58-year-old is regarded as “a woman of firsts”.
She was one of the first women judges on the Eastern Cape High Court, the first black woman to be appointed to the SCA, the first woman deputy president of the court, and later, the first woman president of the SCA, the report said.
