Cape Town – The public comment period for the appointment of the Chief Justice has ended, and the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) is now set to proceed with interviews.
President Cyril Ramaphosa has endorsed Deputy Chief Justice Mandisa Maya for the Chief Justice position and Justice Dumisani Zondi for the deputy president of the Supreme Court of Appeal.
Maya is the current Deputy Chief Justice and has held the positions of Deputy President and President of the Supreme Court of Appeal, SA Gov News reported.
The Chief Justice position will become vacant when Raymond Zondo’s term of office comes to an end on 31 August 2024.
According to EWN, Maya and Zondi will undergo interviews on 21 May by the JSC, where Judge Maya will have the opportunity to outline her vision for the judiciary.
“As Judges Matter, we have often raised concerns about the complicated and ineffective governance and administration of the courts and the whole judiciary, we have also worried about how slow the process of disciplining judges is. We hope she will speak to some of those issues,” the report quoted researcher at Judges Matter, Mbekezeli Benjamin, as saying.
The JSC will review public comments ahead of the interviews.
