Cape Town – A fire in the Booysens informal settlement in Johannesburg CBD on Monday destroyed around 100 shacks, leaving many families homeless.
Emergency services successfully contained the blaze, preventing further damage.
Disaster management officials are working to provide temporary shelter for the displaced families and arrange food parcels and other relief.
Emergency services spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi emphasised the need to address the needs of those affected by the fire.
“We will have to activate our disaster management officials. You can see that there’s a lot of people who have been left displaced. We have to make sure that, you know, we can be able to see whether we can be able to organise some temporary shelter for them from our disaster management officials,” EWN quoted him as saying.
“They will be the ones who will make sure that they organise that and ensure that they can be able to organize maybe some, you know, food parcels and so on.”
