Cape Town – A Johannesburg metro police officer died after allegedly being shot by police officers while attempting to arrest her son for reckless driving in Dobsonville, Soweto.
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) reported that the incident occurred on Saturday night.
According to Ipid spokesperson Phaladi Shuping, police officers pursued a car driving recklessly until it stopped at a house, where they attempted to arrest the driver.
“It is alleged that the police officers were on patrol when they saw a car that was driving recklessly, and they tried to stop it. The driver did not stop and the police pursued it until it stopped at a house in Monaisa Street in Dobsonville.
“The police officers allegedly approached the driver and asked him why he was driving recklessly and refusing to stop when they asked him to. They allegedly told him that they are placing him under arrest for reckless and negligent driving,” Shuping said.
The driver’s mother then reportedly emerged from the house, engaged in an argument with the officers, and allegedly fired shots at them.
In response, the officers returned fire, resulting in the death of the metro police officer.
Ipid is currently investigating the case.
