Cape Town — Ewa Walus, the daughter of infamous Chris Hani killer, Janusz Walus, has shed information on the impact her father’s actions have had on the family.
Walus plotted with Clive Derby-Lewis to kill former former SACP leader, Chris Hani, on 10 April 1993, just one year prior to South Africa’s transition to democracy. He was released on parole in December 2022.
Ewa did an exclusive interview with eNCA to reveal she is currently in South Africa in support of negotiations over the potential deportation of her father Janusz to Poland, while sharing the devastating effect his crime had on the family.
Ewa is currently supporting her father’s bid to return to Poland to live the rest of his life, despite enduring a ton of prejudice due to his actions.
“Lindiwe Hani told me once we lost our fathers on the same day, it was beautiful and I am grateful to her for that. He paid his price, he has served his sentence. [His crime] had an effect on my own image, that people think I share his views. I am completely opposite. However, he is still my father.” she said.

She also said that, while her father has felt the remorse from his actions, she still believes that he is a racist. She hopes that he will adjust his stance upon his return to Poland and will prioritise fostering a relationship with his family over politics.
“I don’t know what the effect of this case will be on my daughter, I don’t know how to protect her. My skin is now hard but she is still young.” Ewa said of her 1–year-old daughter who does not want to meet Walus.
Walus allegedly said in his parole hearings to the Constitutional Court that he had turned over a new leaf.
“I have great remorse in respect of what I have done. I realise today that it was completely unacceptable. Ever since my incarceration I have returned to my Roman Catholic faith which has helped me fully understand my wrongdoings. I have accepted the new SA, its constitution and its constitutional dispensation,” Walus said.
