Cape Town – The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) is treating as urgent and serious allegations made by fake TikTok doctor Matthew Lani, who claims he was denied access to health facilities for medical care.
Lani, who is HIV positive, posted a video saying he was prevented from entering a local clinic to pick up his antiretroviral pills.
He accused the Gauteng Health Department of instructing security guards to bar him from their healthcare facilities.
In October, he was caught at Helen Joseph Hospital wearing a stethoscope, purportedly for TikTok content.
Lani said since then, the Department of Health had issued a circular instructing his prohibition from entering any of its facilities.
The department, however, has denied such instructions and has opened a criminal case against Lani for impersonating a medical professional.
According to EWN, the SAHRC is investigating the matter, emphasising Lani’s entitlement to medical care regardless of allegations against him.
“It is a serious complaint, and I don’t think we should take it under the cloud about who brought the complaint to the commission, any person can bring a complaint to the commission and we need to investigate it thoroughly,” the report quoted Manager for the Human Rights Commission in Gauteng, Zamantungwa Mbeki as saying.
