Johannesburg — The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) will investigate the death of a 22-year-old engineering student at the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT).
It is believed that the student, identified as Thabelo Mbau, was a second year student who lived at the Khayalethu Student Residence in eMalahleni. He succumbed to his injuries at the hands of police officials last week. Mbau’s death has outraged fellow TUT students, who alleged of police brutality, The Citizen reported.
IPID spokesperson, Phaladi Shuping, said a post mortem was conducted yesterday and seven people who witnessed what happened, gave their statements.
“IPID will investigate the incident without fear or favour to establish all the facts of the matter. IPID investigators will engage the Senior Public Prosecutor (SPP) once there is sufficient information that will assist the SPP in deciding on the matter,” Shuping said.
Shuping also urged the public to let law enforcement investigate the matter fully and properly, and urged anyone else with information on the matter to report it to them urgently.
According to IOL, TUT released a statement saying it was deeply saddened by the passing of Mbau and it was going to provide support to his family friends.
