Cape Town – In a shocking turn of events, police have confirmed the untimely death of one of the investigators involved in the Thabo Bester escape case.
The National Commissioner of the SAPS, General Fannie Masemola, announced the news on Monday.
The circumstances surrounding the senior officer’s death, who also held the position of Provincial Head responsible for Organised Crime in the Free State province, are currently under investigation.

“In-house employee health and wellness experts which includes chaplains have been dispatched to provide psychosocial services to the family and colleagues of the deceased member,” police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said.
Masemola paid tribute to the fallen officer, acknowledging his long and dedicated service of 31 uninterrupted years.
“Over the years he has proven himself to be a highly skilled detective with a wealth of experience and knowledge in crime detection. His departure leaves a void in the SAPS detective environment. On behalf of the SAPS, our sincerest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of our officer”, he said.
Police said the identity of the deceased member will be released once all of his family members have been notified.
