Cape Town — A grade 9 learner from Raleledu Senior Secondary School in Limpopo has died from food poisoning after allegedly eating contaminated food that was served at the school.
The learner was among 52 other students who were admitted to hospital after they complained of stomach cramps on Friday 23 February. The learner died in hospital while the other students were discharged. he incident happened on Friday but only came to light this morning, SABC News reported.
“The MEC of Education in Limpopo, Mavhungu Lerule Ramakhanya, is sending her deepest condolences and her prayer to the bereaved family. This can never be something to be brushed off and an investigation will be conducted to find the root cause of what happened to our leaners.” Education Department spokesperson Matome Taueatsoala said.

According to The Daily Sun, Lerule-Ramakhanya said it was “heartbreaking” to see a pupil die like this and said an investigation would be conducted to determine the root cause of the pupils’ illness.
“This is very heartbreaking. We send our deepest codndolences and prayers to the bereaved family. Alleged food poisoning is not to be taken lightly, especially with so much awareness in the country about unsafe food,” Lerule-Ramakhanya said.
“When a young life is lost, the future slowly becomes bleak, and we need to protect our youth. Psycho-social support will also be offered to the school community in light of this incident,” the MEC added.
