One of the cases currently before the commission is that of Justice Minister Thembi Simelane and her R575 600 loan from a fraud accused in the VBS matter, reports eNCA.
Simelane, the former mayor of Polokwane, became embroiled in the VBS fraud matter, after it was revealed that she had received a loan from VBS fraud accused Ralliom Razwinane, of Gundo Wealth Solutions. Razwinane had brokered a deal for the municipality with VBS Mutual Bank while Simelane was mayor. The bank has since gone bankrupt, and a number of municipal officials in Limpopo are being investigated in connection with the looting of R2 billion from the bank.
SowetanLive reported on 16 October that the Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA) fined Razwinane R3 million and banned him from providing financial advice for 10 years. The FSCA found that Razwinane, who had advised the Polokwane local municipality and Community Schemes Ombud Services, to invest surplus funds in VBS, had failed to render financial services honestly, fairly with due skill, care and diligence.
Simelane has defended the loan in Parliament, saying that she paid it back in full. However MPs have questioned aspects of the loan.
President Cyril Ramaphosa is reportedly still considering the Simelane matter.
Other issues on the NEC’s agenda this weekend are the ANC’s poor performance in the May 2024 elections, in which it lost its outright majority in the National Assembly, and the performance of the Government of National Unity.
