Cape Town — Patriotic Alliance (PA) leader Gayton McKenzie’s has resigned as mayor of the Central Karoo District municipality in the Western Cape, keeping his promise to end his tenure exactly one year after taking office.
In his resignation, McKenzie praised the attitude he saw in the Central Karoo while serving as mayor, adding that it is what is required throughout the country
“I am also grateful for seeing opportunities here while others saw delay and disuse. This can-do attitude is what we need throughout the country, which is why I am leaving the Karoo to focus on the greater challenge before us all of fixing our beloved country,” The Citizen quoted McKenzie as saying on Tuesday.
He also highlighted his achievements during his year as mayor by raising funds rather than relying on a budget supplied by the government.
“All the bucket toilets, pools, water solutions, and more were done using private money we fundraised.
“It demonstrated how it is possible to achieve great things without needing the kinds of budgets that officials shamelessly ask for. One must just be efficient and not lose money towards corruption at every step of the way,” he said, according to News24.
Thank you Central Karoo for such an emotional but rocking farewell party, the biggest ever. I’m serving my last 3 days ??? pic.twitter.com/8wtOLySa0z

Despite having initially displayed interest in leading the City of Johannesburg, McKenzie made it clear that his resignation as mayor of the Central Karoo District had nothing to do with the vacant mayoral position in Johannesburg.
He said he was “not in the race anymore”, and will be embarking on a tour of SA to canvass support for 2024.
“I’m eagerly awaiting to see who will emerge eventually in order to give them maximum support,” he said.
