Cape Town — The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) held a media briefing where it gave an update on the ANC and MK party leaked election candidate lists.
The IEC idnetified an unnamed individual as the prime suspect who leaked the candidate lists of the ANC and MK party shortly after each party submitted their lists by the IEC’s 5pm deadline last Friday. It is believed the individual used the commission’s internal systems, EWN repored.
The IEC said its preliminary investigation shows that the documents were generated from a work station in its headquarters, before they were deleted.
“The work station was secured and images in the presence of the official whose credentials were used to generate the report. a forensic analysis of that computer is currently underway.corrective action in terms of applicable labour laws is underway and the official has been asked to motivate why they should not be fired.” IEC Chief Electoral Commissioner Sy Mamabolo, said.

The IEC also revealed the number of voters reached a record high as 27.79 million South Africans registered to vote, the highest number since the dawn of democracy. The voters’ roll will be certified by the Chief Electoral Officer on Tuesday, JacarandaFM reported.
Mamabolo said the certification follows the finalisation of objections on the provisional voters’ roll that was published for inspection last month.
“Since the voters’ roll was compiled for the first time ahead of the 1999 national and provincial elections, it (the voters’ roll) has shown steady growth of over 35 % percent and contains the highest number of registered voters, recording an increase of 9.6 million voters since the 1999 general elections.
Mamabolo said 15 million voters were female, accounting for 55%, while there were 1.7 million are voters aged 18-39 years.
The IEC says a record 27.79 million registered voters are eligible to cast their votes on 29 May. The announcement was made by the Chief Electoral Officer, Sy Mamabolo, ahead of polls. @NqobileMadlala_ has more from the briefing.
