Cape Town – The Investigating Directorate (ID) has reportedly said that it is not handling any complaints made by suspended public protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane.
The ID said this as it responded to a newspaper article claiming that the late ANC MP Tina Joemat-Pettersson was questioned by the ID shortly before her death, Times Live reported.
Joemat-Pettersson was facing allegations of extortion from David Skosana, Mkhwebane’s husband.
Skosana accused Joemat-Pettersson of asking for a bribe to make an inquiry into Mkhwebane’s fitness to hold office “go away”, the report said.
The report cited City Press as saying that Joemat-Pettersson was informed that she would be arrested if she refused to co-operate with the investigators during a two-hour meeting.
But the ID said that their meeting with the former minister was to address an existing matter and not to interview her as a suspect.
“The ID team did meet Joemat-Pettersson to clarify issues on an existing ID matter. She was not interviewed as a suspect but the team sought to clarify an issue in her official capacity on a matter,” ID spokesperson Sindisiwe Seboka was quoted as saying.
The ID clarified that their meeting with Joemat-Pettersson was to address an existing matter and not to interview her as a suspect.
Seboka dismissed any suggestions that Joemat-Pettersson’s death was related to their visit.
Mkhwebane plans to hold a media briefing to discuss the ongoing section 194 inquiry and provide evidence of extortion, bribery, and corruption against Qubudile Dyantyi, the chair of the inquiry, Pemmy Majodina, ANC parliamentary chief whip, and Joemat-Pettersson, the report said.
Joemat-Pettersson passed away on last week on Monday.
Details around her death are still sketchy.
