Cape Town – A tragic incident in Kariega, outside Gqeberha, has reportedly left a family and community haunted by the image of a burnt body of a father, Craig Isaacs, 45, holding his 7-year-old son, Tyrese Samuels, tightly in his arms as they were engulfed by flames in their tiny dwelling on Sunday.
According to News24, the fire claimed the lives of Craig, his partner Antoinette Samuels, 44, and their son.
Neighbours who tried to help were left devastated by the sight.
A neighbour named Melissa Millborough recounted how Craig Isaacs bravely tried to protect his son at his own expense, highlighting his selflessness in the face of the tragedy.
“I had never seen such a thing in my life. Craig had his son in his arms, and they were carried out like that together. He wanted to protect his son at his own expense.
“I felt so sad seeing that. He was being so selfless. He probably knew it was too late, and they weren’t going to make it, so he opted to try and minimise Tyrese’s pain as much as possible,” the report quoted Millborough as saying.
The family praised Craig’s heroism and his final act of protecting his son, while other relatives and friends remembered Tyrese as a beloved and lively young boy.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, with no foul play suspected.
The community is grappling with the loss of three loved ones in a horrifying manner.
