Cape Town – A tuckshop owner in Tongaat, Durban, Ideleen Chetty reportedly fought a knife-wielding robber with her fists after he entered her tuckshop last week and tried to rob her.
According to
IOL, on the day of the incident, Chetty was sitting outside the tuckshop with her friend and her friend’s two children, aged 14 and 3. It was quiet for business.
A man approached Chetty and told her he was hungry. Chetty responded by giving him the prices of the items she’ was selling at the tuckshop such as biscuits, chips and cooldrink.
The man opted for biscuits. Chetty then got up and went into the tuckshop. She placed the latch over the gate at the entrance to the tuckshop while the man was standing outside the serving counter.
However, while she was selecting different biscuits to show the man, she heard her friend scream. She wanted to know why the gate was opened. When Chetty turned, the man was inside the tuckshop.
The man pulled out a knife from his pocket and flicked it in front of her face. Chetty could not activate the panic button because he had blocked her path, reported
The Voice.
“My only form of defence was the biscuits and my fists. I began to scream hysterically and I took the biscuits and threw them at him. When the biscuits hit him, he turned his face and lowered the hand with the knife. I knew this was my chance to escape. I made a fist and I used all my strength to continuously punch him in the chest. I cannot remember how many times I hit him,” the report quoted Chetty as saying
The man then fled the scene.
Chetty activated the panic button which led to the members of the private security company, Reaction Unit South Africa being dispatched.
The man is however still at large.
