Cape Town – Messages of condolences continued to pour in on social media on Sunday following the death of Muhsin Hendricks, the world’s first openly gay imam, who was shot and killed in a targeted attack near Gqeberha.
Hendricks, a prominent LGBTQ advocate, was in a vehicle when two masked gunmen blocked the car and opened fire before fleeing the scene.
“Two unknown suspects with covered faces got out of the vehicle and started firing multiple shots at the vehicle,” the Eastern Cape force said in a statement.
Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities Deputy Minister Steve Letsike says the killing of Imam Muhsin Hendricks exposes the level of intolerance that exists in communities. “Thereafter they fled the scene, and the driver noticed that Hendricks who was seated at the back of the vehicle was shot and killed.”
Police are investigating the motive and have urged the public to come forward with any information.
