Cape Town —A dedicated husband has been preparing for a daunting 600km walk from Cape Town to George in order to raise funds for his wife’s studies.
“I am trying to raise funds to pay off her studies after NSFAS did not settle the account and now Unisa won’t allow her to graduate,” said Lucien Williams.
The determined husband will depart Cape Town on March 23, which is his 40th birthday, to arrive in George on April Fool’s Day 2023.

Lucien’s wife Washiela Williams said that she started studying towards a Bachelor’s degree in Education in 2012 but had to give it up in 2013 due to financial difficulty.
“In 2018 I decided to apply for funding at NSFAS and reapply through Unisa and was accepted and got the bursary. Everything went well as my studies has been paid for 2018,2019,2020 and continued to pass all my modules,” Washiela said.
“I passed all my modules in 2021 however the outstanding fees for 2021 reappeared as outstanding on my student account. Then in 2022, I was funded again. I finished my degree end of 2022 however due to the outstanding balance I am unable to graduate.”

Lucien revealed that he has been approaching car manufacturers in hopes that they would sponsor a support vehicle for transportation while he takes on the long walk.
“Many of us don’t know what our purpose is till late in life,my wife though she found it out to be teaching. She comes alive when working with children, activated and engaged educating the future,” he said.
“So my purpose is to support her as she supported me for 16 years. My goal is to see her over that finish line,to reach that graduation papers and get that degree.”
