Cape Town – The Department of Home Affairs is addressing identity fraud by requiring those with blocked IDs to provide written explanations within 30 days to avoid cancellation.
The department said that this initiative aims to resolve long-standing issues with wrongfully blocked IDs and reduce fraudulent documents in circulation.
The move follows a court order mandating fair administrative processes to distinguish between legitimate and fraudulent IDs.
Minister Leon Schreiber emphasised the importance of public participation in ensuring a just process while reinforcing the department’s commitment to tackling fraud.
“I encourage members of the public to make use of this opportunity to ensure that we conduct a just and equitable process to unblock IDs that have been wrongfully blocked.
“At the same time, the gazetting of these decisive measures underscores our commitment to clamp down on fraud, and to move with urgency to resolve longstanding challenges while upholding the rule of law,” Schreiber said.
