Cape Town — The Department of Home Affairs will extend its operating hours until 7pm this week to accommodate voters who need new IDs ahead of the elections.
With the general elections set to take place on Wednesday 29 May, there are still some citizens who need to get their IDs in order to vote. The department said it would allow individuals who need to apply for and collect temporary identity documents from the department, to do so, EWN reported.
Your ID is your ticket to participating in the democratic process. Before heading to your voting station, double-check that you have your Smart ID Card, Green barcoded ID book, or Temporary ID Certificate ready. The National Joint Operational and Intelligent Structure (NATJOINTS) revealed this during a media briefing on Sunday, as it outlined its security plans for the elections.
“You are also reminded that the Department of Home Affairs will open until 19H00 on Monday and Tuesday and 21H00 on Wednesday,” said the chairperson of NATJOINTS, Tebello Mosikili.
Mosikili also said Home Affairs was one of many departments fully equipped and ready for the elections, and she also reiterated that police are ready to make sure elections go ahead without any issues.
“It is more boots on the ground, our law enforcement agencies are out there.” she said.
