Cape Town – A murder suspect has been arrested by Richards Bay police after they gave him a lift while he was hitchhiking.
Police say the 19-year-old youth is wanted in connection with the murder of 21-year-old Khanya Mthembu, who was stabbed to death in the Mzingazi area, KwaZulu-Natal, on 8 September 2024.
Police said they were told the suspect was hitchhiking in the Madlankala area in Esikhaleni to escape to his hideout in Nongoma.
“An operation was immediately put in motion and the suspect was offered a lift by a police officer who was driving an unmarked police vehicle,” the police reported.

“The police officer pulled over at a filling station and tactically requested back-up, leading to the arrest of the suspect.”
They said Mthembu was stabbed to death following an altercation at a tavern.
“When the victim left the tavern, the suspect reportedly followed him and stabbed him to death next to a sports field.”
The suspect is due to appear in the Richards Bay Magistrates’ Court on Friday, 13 September 2024.
