Cape Town — 65 suspects who were accused of inciting violence during the July 2021 unrest in the country, were served indictments ahead of their trial in the high court next year.
The group of men appeared before the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Friday and the state alleges that they are behind the massive disruption that cost the country’s economy billions of rands, according to EWN.
The State has now served indictments to the 65 accused in the matter, adding three more charges.
“In addition to the charges of conspiracy to commit public violence and incitement to commit public violence, the State has added charges of terrorism, sedition, and conspiracy to commit murder,” said the NPA’s Natasha Ramkisson-Kara.

The accused are currently out on bail, while there are three that are out on a warning. One of the accused was absent from his court appearance on Friday, with defence lawyer Artie Huntley saying he had an emailed sick note for his client, TimesLIVE reported.
Further reports suggested that prosecutor advocate, Mahen Naidu took the court through changes in legal representation of some of the accused. He said indictments had been served on all the accused and their attorneys. This was confirmed defence attorney Boitumelo Majodina.
Magistrate SE Khumalo ruled the matter be transferred to the Durban high court on January 30 2024.
