Kwazulu-Natal – A 10-year-old girl attempted suicide after her father allegedly assaulted her on Friday afternoon.
Residents of a block of flats in Verulam, KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) requested assistance for the child. Officers from Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) attended the incident and located the girl in her neighbour’s flat.
According to RUSA, the girl’s father advised her to commit suicide.
“She informed a female RUSA Member that she was playing with her twin brother and elder sibling when they injured her. She began crying and vomiting when her father allegedly assaulted her and advised her to commit suicide,” RUSA said in a statement.
“The girl wrote a suicide note before she entered a bedroom. The note stated that her family should not enter the room as she intended on ending her life. She then tied two scarves together,” RUSA added.
“She secured one end to her neck before she climbed onto a cupboard. The minor was in the process of fastening the other end of the scarf to an extension cord that was mounted to the wall when her 13-year-old sibling entered the room and prevented her from jumping off the cupboard.”
The sibling allegedly tore the suicide note. Neighbours reportedly intervened after they heard the commotion.
South African Police Services in Verulam were called to the scene and are investigating further.
