Cape Town – The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has warned of heavy rain and potential flooding in parts of the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal from Sunday to Tuesday, caused by a cut-off low-pressure system.
This system is expected to bring widespread rainfall, with up to 200mm possible along coastal areas, along with severe thunderstorms, hail, and damaging winds, SAWS said in a statement.
“Some areas in the summer rainfall region recently experienced their first spring thunderstorms, but much of South Africa experienced calm weather conditions over the past few days,” the SAWS said.

It added: “Cut-off low-pressure systems are notorious for resulting in severe weather during the spring months, including heavy rainfall that can lead to flooding, as well as intense thunderstorms accompanied by hail and damaging winds.”
Impact-based warnings include:
- Orange Level 6 Warning for severe rain and flooding between Port Alfred and Mtunzini.
- Orange Level 5 Warning for coastal flooding between East London and Port Edward.
- Yellow Level 4 and 2 Warnings for localised flooding, hail, and wind damage in parts of KwaZulu-Natal, Free State, Mpumalanga, and Gauteng.
Cooler weather is expected in some regions, with calm conditions returning by Wednesday.
SAWS urged the public to stay informed through weather updates and warnings to ensure safety.
