Cape Town – SAHPRA is investigating reports of a dangerous solvent found in two batches of Benylin paediatric syrup after receiving an alert from the Nigerian National Agency for Food and Drug Administration.
The affected batches may contain diethylene glycol, which is toxic and potentially fatal if consumed.
According to EWN, SAHPRA spokesperson Madimetja Mashishi said that the organisation swiftly took action upon receiving the alert.
“SAHPRA immediately contacted the South African manufacturer, Kenvue, for a response. Following engagements with the manufacturer and in the best interest of the public, it was resolved that affected batches would immediately be recalled while an investigation is ongoing. Diethylene glycol is toxic to humans when consumed, and can prove fatal,” the report quoted Mashishi as saying.
SAHPRA has recalled the affected batches and is urging consumers experiencing adverse effects to seek medical attention.
Collaborative investigations between SAHPRA and Kenvue, previously known as Johnson and Johnson, revealed that the affected batches have been distributed to South Africa, eSwatini, Rwanda, Kenya, Tanzania, and Nigeria, eNCA reported.
The public is strongly advised to monitor any symptoms while consuming Benylin, which may include headaches, abdominal pain, vomiting, and diarrhea, as these could potentially result in fatal outcomes.
