Cape Town – A 200kg container of hazardous chemicals has washed ashore near Stilbaai on the South Cape coastline, with the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) advising people to avoid it.
There’s a possibility of three more containers still adrift, Times Live reported.
While the beached container isn’t an immediate environmental threat, a Hazardous Materials Fire and Rescue team will recover it.
Though there’s no confirmed missing chemical cargo, containers like the one found are typically packed in sets of four, raising concerns.
Craig Lambinon, the spokesperson for NSRI, said that personnel from the Fire and Rescue Services in the Garden Route were currently addressing the hazardous container, according to IOL.
“Disaster Risk Management in the Garden Route confirmed that the sealed container containing hazardous dangerous chemicals is not a present risk and will be recovered on Saturday by a Hazmat (Hazardous Materials) Fire and Rescue Services team,” the report quoted Lambinon as saying
Authorities urge caution and advise against approaching any containers. The public is encouraged to report sightings to the Garden Route Disaster Risk Management hotline..
