Cape Town – The Gauteng Hawks confiscated drugs worth R1.5 million at OR Tambo International Airport this week
The drugs were discovered by a courier company which alerted the authorities about 11 bags wrapped in plastic.
The parcel had been shipped from Germany to South Africa, and both the sender and intended receiver are now under investigation, News24 reported.
“It’s known that they came from Germany destined for RSA. Now persons involved, the sender and receiver, are a subject of our investigation, and the type of drug itself, which the SAPS forensic laboratory will determine,” the report quoted police spokesperson Colonel Philani Nkwalase as saying.
Nkwalase said the police were “alerted by a courier company which found 11 bags suspected to be drugs weighing 25 kg each. The suspected drugs, wrapped in visible plastic, were concealed as spare parts in a brown container.
“The suspected drugs with an estimated street value of R1.5 million were taken to the forensic laboratory for analysis. No arrest has been made and the investigation continues”.
The specific type of drug is yet to be determined by the SAPS forensic laboratory.
Major General Ebrahim Kadwa, the Provincial Hawks head, commended the courier company for their vigilance and cooperation, saying that the drug seizure has disrupted the operations of the drug syndicate.
