Cape Town — The Gupta brothers – Ajay and Anil – were arrested on Friday for their alleged involvement in the death of a prominent builder in Dehradun, India.
The brothers were taken into police custody for allegedly aiding and abetting the suicide of Satyendra Singh Sahni. Sahni had written a suicide to Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, saying the Guptas had been threatening him for some time, which led him to take his own life, IOL reported.
Sahni said the brothers had been pressuring him over financial matters relating to a partnership project between them. Shani’s son, Ranvir, lodgend a complaint against the brothers in 2023.
My father was constantly being threatened by Ajay Gupta, son of Shiv Gupta, and Anil Gupta, son of Shyam Lal Gupta, residents of Nehru Colony, Dalanwala, over financial matters. A written complaint was submitted to the local police on 19 May 2023 about the Gupta brothers’ threats, harassment, intimidation, and blackmail,” Ranvir said.
According to Times of India, Ranvir said his father was under immense pressure from the brothers to transfer ownership of his two construction companies to them, and threatened his son-in-law with imprisonment if he failed to do so.
In his note, Sahni said he undertook two projects in the city based on their market reputation but lacked the funds to sustain it. He was introduced to the Guptas through a mutual friend, when they were seeking investment opportunities.
He said Anil had agreed to invest 85% of the total project funds as a silent partner, with the promsie of minimal interference.
Dehradun SSP Ajai Singh confirmed the detention and subsequent arrest of the Guptas from their residence in Dalanwala area of Dehradun.
“Sawhney had lodged a complaint with the police on May 16 as well, which was under investigation. The two accused will be brought before a local court on Saturday morning, and further action will be taken thereafter,” he said.
