Cape Town – An off-duty police officer was reportedly killed by a group of four individuals after he shot and injured a patron at a tavern in the Eastern Cape.
The incident took place at the Philakuzenzela tavern in Ntshigo, Tsolo.
The officer, who worked at the Mthatha static police unit, got into a heated argument with a patron, resulting in him shooting and injuring the individual.
The officer then fled the scene but was pursued by members of the community.
He was eventually caught and disarmed by the group, who allegedly stoned him to death.
“The service firearm was found and seized with empty cartridges and a big stone at the scene,” Times Live quoted police spokesperson W/O Ndiphiwe Mhlakuvana as saying.
The police have arrested four suspects in connection with the incident, and their identities, along with that of the slain officer, will be disclosed after their first court appearance.
The injured patron is reported to be alive.
