Cape Town — The Athlone community is in shock after a Grade 11 girl from Belgravia High School was shot and killed after she was caught in the crossfire of a gang shooting.
Athlone is an area where gang violence is present in certain parts, and the Athlone community have encouraged people to assist police in the hunt for the suspects responsible. Police reported that the teenager tried to run back to the school before she collapsed and died. She was declared dead at the scene.
A 20-year-old man was also shot and killed in the process. The suspects fled the scene and have yet to be apprehended.
“With scant regard for the lives of others, rival gangs fired several shots randomly at around 12:30, killing a 20 year old man in Canal Road Athlone. A 16-year-old girl who was standing at the gates of Belgravia High School in Vlei Road was caught in the crossfire and sustained a fatal gunshot wound. The suspects fled the scene and are yet to be apprehended.” police spokesperson, Colonel Andre Traut, said.
