Cape Town – A tragic incident occurred at Mandlethu Primary School in Tsakane, east of Johannesburg, where a grade 1 pupil died allegedly after consuming biscuits bought from a local spaza shop.
The learner experienced health complications and started vomiting before succumbing to the illness.
According to reports, the parents confirmed that the child had eaten biscuits from a spaza shop owned by foreign nationals.
“It is alleged that the learner began experiencing health complications in class just before break at 11am and started vomiting a few minutes later. The parents were contacted while emergency services were also alerted to provide necessary medical assistance.
“Unfortunately the learner was certified dead by paramedics upon arrival.
“According to information at our disposal, the parents confirmed that the child had eaten biscuits bought from a local spaza shop owned by foreign nationals, Times Live quoted department spokesperson Steve Mabona as saying.
Emergency services were called, but the paramedics declared the learner dead upon arrival.
The Gauteng Department of Education expressed deep sadness and urged parents to be vigilant about their children’s food intake. Police are investigating the incident, and counselors were to be deployed to the school for support.
Mabona said that the police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, EWN reported.
