Cape Town – A 12-year-old girl tragically lost her life on Saturday evening after being caught in rip currents at Monwabisi Beach in False Bay.
Emergency services, including the NSRI Strandfontein, City of Cape Town (CoCT) lifeguards, and EMS, responded to reports of a drowning in progress at around 6:45 PM.
According to officials, the girl was swept away by strong rip currents before being pulled to shore unresponsive. A 34-year-old man, who attempted to rescue her, went missing in the surf and remains unaccounted for despite an extensive sea and shoreline search.
The man and the girl were not related.

“The girl was transported to hospital, reportedly by private transport, but she was sadly declared deceased on arrival at hospital, she had succumbed to fatal drowning,” NSRI said.
Authorities, including Police Water Policing and Diving Services and EMS Metro Rescue, continue to search for the missing man using drones and rescue teams.
The NSRI, along with police and city lifeguards, are assisting in the ongoing efforts.
“Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the deceased child,” said the NSRI.
Police have opened an inquest docket, and further investigations are underway.
