Cape Town – In a shocking incident on Tuesday afternoon, an elderly German couple fell victim to a brazen robbery along the picturesque Baden Powell Drive, near Wolfgat in Cape Town.
The incident unfolded at approximately 12:45 when the couple stopped to capture the scenic beauty of the area.
According to a statement released by the police, the male passenger decided to take a nap in the vehicle while his wife ventured out with a camera. Their peaceful excursion took a terrifying turn when they were approached by two unknown males. The suspects wasted no time in launching their criminal act.
“The one suspect went to the vehicle and after knocking on the car window, he opened the driver’s door and grabbed the GPS which was plugged in on the front seat.
“The suspect struck the victim, and showed a panga in his hand when he tried to resist him. The second suspect grabbed the female victim’s camera and forced her down onto the ground. The victim then gave the suspect a cash note in an attempt to get him to leave her alone,” police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk said.
The assailants, however, showed no mercy.
Fortunately, passers-by intervened just in the nick of time. As the Good Samaritans approached the scene, the suspects made a run for it.
“A chase ensued and the suspects were arrested and the stolen items recovered along with the weapons used to commit the deed. One of the passers-by that assisted was Colonel Dirk Rademan, Kleinvlei SAPS Station Commander,” Van Wyk said.
Both suspects, aged 30 and 34, now face charges of armed robbery and possession of an unlicensed firearm.
They are expected to appear at the Mitchells Plain Magistrates court once formal charges are filed.
