Johannesburg — The South African Weather Services (SAWS) issued an Orange Level 5 warning for Gauteng and parts of the North West for this coming week.
In a statement, SAWS said heavy intermittent rainfall was expected from Sunday through to Thursday 20 February and will hit Gauteng, the North West, as well as parts of the Free State, Mpumalanga and Limpopo.
SAWS advised communities in low-lying areas to be wary of the disruptive rain and urged motorists and pedestrians to remain vigilant where visibility is affected.
It is expected that the rainfall accumulation will be between 20mm and 50mm, while daytime temperatures are expected to be cool. Botswana is the main source of cloudy and rainy conditions.
The forecast for Monday 17 February predicts thunderstorms for North West and Gauteng, with 80% widespread showers and disruptive rain expected in these places.
Summer thunderstorms across South Africa are expected to develop in the afternoon into the evening. The rain is expected to continue from Sunday through to Tuesday 18 February, with disruptive rain set in the region of 30mm to 50mm.

According to EWN, Gauteng Emergency Services are calling on communities and residents to remain on high alert following the level 5 warnings across the province.
Tshwane Emergency Services urged residents to remain indoors and avoid flooded areas and low-lying bridges, with spokesperson Lindsay Zwelithini Nguni saying they would remain on high alert for any emergencies to arise.
“The ESD will continue to monitor the weather reports and remain on high alert for any related emergencies. Residents are equally strongly urged and encouraged to stay informed and monitor short-term weather forecasts and any warnings or alerts issued by the South African Weather Service and other credible sources, and to immediately follow the recommended safety tips,” Mnguni said.
