Johannesburg β Gauteng MEC for Education, Matome Chiloane, has condemned the tragic rape and murder of a grade 11 girl from Chipa-Tabane Secondary School in Refilwe, Cullinan.
In a department statement, it is reported that the learner attended extra school classes on Friday 22 March and Saturday 23 March. The learner left home on Sunday 24 March around 6pm and did not return home. Her mother then filed a missing person’s report.
The family later received information that the girl was last seen with her cousin and visited the cousin’s house on 25 March, where the girl’s lifeless boyd was found inside a room in the cousin’s house. Police were contacted to further investigate, department spokesperson, Steve Mabona, said.

A suspect handed himself over to police and is expected to appear in the Bronkhorstspruit Magistrates Court on Wednesday. Mabona said the learner was allegedly sexually assaulted before she was strangled to death. MEC Chiloane also extended his condolences to the family and condemned such a brutal death.
“We are deeply devastated by the passing of our dear learner, especially through such gruesome circumstannces. We solemnly sympathise with her beloved family, extending our most sincerest condolences to them and the school community at large,” Chiloane said.
