Johannesburg — The Gauteng Department of Education has condemned the tragic passing of a teacher and student at two Gauteng high schools this past week.
In a department statement, it confirmed the death of a Grade 12 Grade 12 teacher at Hyde Park Secondary School on Wednesday 6 March. The teacher was allegedly found hanging in the sports grounds of the school, as paramedics declared him dead on their arrival.
The other tragedy happened at Jeppe High School for Boys when a Grade 11 student named Kaiden Bowie, passed away after a rugby match against Hoerskool Die Anker on Tuesday 5 March.
It is believed that he was not feeling well after the game. Paramedics tried to stabilise Bowie and called for an but he passed away shortly after the ambulance arrived.

The department’s spokesperson, Steve Mabona, said the police are investigating both incidents.
“Our psychosocial support unit has been dispatched to both schools for necessary trauma counselling and support. We are grateful to the South African Depression and Anxiety Group, SADAG [South African Depression and Anxiety Group], for also availing their services for additional support at these schools.”
Gauteng MEC for education, Matome Chiloane, said he was deeply saddened by the passing of the learner and teacher.
“We are deeply disheartened by these tragic incidents and wish to extend our most sincerest condolences to the families of the departed, as well as their respective school communities,” said Chiloane.
