Free State man found guilty following clinic faeces attack

Cape Town — The Welkom Magistrate’s Court has found a patient guilty of assault and humilitating healthcare workers after he poured faeces over a healthcare worker in the Free State.

The 38-year-old man, Tshediso Mbele, appeared in court last week. He was found guilty of the July 2024 incident and is set to be sentenced on 20 March 2025, The Citizen reported.

The patient visited the clinic on 25 July 2024 and was dissatisfied with the poor service speed at the clinic. He left of his own accord but returned the following day with a bucket of faeces, which he poured on an unsuspecting healthcare worker. The incident forced the clinic to shut down early after services were disrupted.

According to TimesLIVE, Mbele had boasted about the attack on his social media page, which led to police finding him and arresting him.

Free State health MEC Monyatso Mahlatsi expressed pride in the health workers’ strength and commitment to justice.

“We commend her for standing firm in the face of adversity and pursuing justice against her perpetrator,” Mahlatsi said.

“We trust that the sentence will send a clear message that violence and abuse will not be tolerated in our health facilities. We urge all patients to remain patient and follow the proper complaints management procedures instead of resorting to violence,” he added.
