Cape Town – The R1.2-million fraud case involving Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) commissioner Nomsa Masuku has reportedly expanded to include her nephew, Ciniso Masuku, as a co-accused.
Ciniso appeared in the Specialised Commercial Crime Court in Palm Ridge on Tuesday, facing fraud and theft charges.
The case relates to allegations that Dr Masuku, as head of Standard Bank’s Corporate Social Investment programme, misused funds from the Adopt-a-School Scholarship Trust, meant for underprivileged students.
The Hawks allege that Ciniso unlawfully benefited from the trust fund, receiving unauthorised scholarships.
Dr. Masuku is also accused of diverting R1.2 million into personal accounts, including transfers to Silver Arrow, a company linked to co-accused Phillip Roux.
“The accused handed himself over this morning and was processed at Johannesburg Central police station on charges of fraud and theft in terms of the Prevention of Organised Crime Act.
“The suspect is charged alongside his aunt, Dr Nomsa Masuku and Mr Phillip Roux, who have since appeared in court and were granted bail of R20 000 and R10 000, respectively.
“Through an intensive probe, the Hawks investigators established that the suspect unlawfully benefitted from the Trust fund as a recepient of undue funds,” a statement from the Hawks read.
The case was postponed to February 6, 2025.
