Cape Town — Former Steinhoff CEO, Markus Jooste, has died after he took his own life, just one day after he was handed a R475 million fine by the Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA).
According to sources close to Jooste, he shot himself while he was being arrested, Newzroom Afrika reported. On 20 March 2024, Jooste was handed a whopping R475 million fine for falsely submitting annual financial statements between 2014 and 2016, as well as 2017. He was infamously in charge of Stenhoff International Holdings NV, once one of the world’s largest retailers, when it collapsed.
Author of “Steinheist” – Rob Rose – said he was surprised to hear of Jooste’s death, as he thought he was the kind of guy who would fight the case until the end.
“I suppose there was a sense that things were closing in on him.” Rose said he was the mastermind of the fraud that led to Steinhoff’s collapse and, according to leaked reports, placed him at the centre of the scandal.
