Cape Town – Two boys, aged 14 and 9, drowned in the Ngwaritsi River in Limpopo’s Sekhukhune District on Sunday.
Police in Limpopo have opened inquest dockets and are investigating the incident, with autopsies pending to confirm the cause of death.
According to police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, the boys were part of a group of three heading to the river to fish.
The 14-year-old entered the water and began struggling, prompting the 9-year-old to attempt a rescue, but both tragically drowned.
“The third one wanted to go into the water but a woman bathing in the river screamed to prevent him from entering the river and the community responded and managed to retrieve two bodies,” Ledwaba said.
