Cape Town — Fire teams have worked tirelessly to contain a blaze that broke out in Masiphumelele in Kommetjie on Monday morning.
Authorities received a call around 4 in the morning that reported that some structures were set alight in the community. No injuries were reported on the scene but the City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Service said law enforcement was called to patrol the fire line, EWN reported.
“The fire has been contained and we are slowly scaling back on the number of vehicles and staff needed at the incident. We should commend the firefighters, who, under trying circumstances did a sterling job by surrounding the fire quickly and preventing any further damage. Staff will remain on site until the area is declared safe,” Carelse said.

According to IOL, The City’s Disaster Risk Management spokesperson, Sonica Lategan, said a formal assessment would be conducted of the fire once the site has been cleared.
“At this stage, there is no verification of the number of affected persons. Indications are that the number of structures destroyed could exceed 100. These statistics will be confirmed once the assessment has been completed, and all affected persons registered for onward submission to Sassa and the National Department of Human Settlements. Humanitarian relief partners, Living Hope and Gift of the Givers are on site to assist with the immediate needs of the affected residents. The assessment will also determine which additional City Services are required on-site to assist with recovery efforts,” Lategan said.
Meanwhile, Gift of the Givers was on the scene since 5 am and offered assistance to the residents affected.
“Gift of the Givers teams are still active and supporting fire victims of five other fire sites over the last five days. Once the site has been declared safe from the firefighters, Gift of the Givers teams will step in to provide humanitarian aid at 11 am,” Gift of the Givers’ Ali Sablay said.
